This Coastal cactus wren (Campyllorhynchus brunnecapillus) is a California state "Species of Special Concern" and a target species for the state's Natural Communities Conservation Planning Program (NCCP), a model effort to address the loss of the coastal sage scrub ecotype in an anticipatory fashion in collaboration with wildlife biologists, resource agencies and land owners.
In keeping with its curious nature well known to birdwatchers, this wren appears to be checking notes taken on its behalf by ornithologist Jonathan Atwood, Ph.D. during his fieldwork on the Palos Verdes Peninsula of southern California.
