Coastal California gnatcatcher

This diminuitive three-inch bird (Polioptila californica californica) is a federally-endangered keystone species for the coastal sage scrub ecotype of southern California, a natural community which has experienced a loss of 99since the early 1900's. This community has become the focus of innovative ecosystem-wide approach to land-use planning in California which has brought developers and wildlife experts into collaboration.
