The Tri-color poison dart frog (Epipedobates tricolor) of south central Ecuador is now endangered. Pharmacologists with Abbott Pharmaceutical synthesized a compound from the protective secretions on the skin of this frog, and that compound known as ABT-594 was found to be 200X more powerful than morphine.

The drug has not seen commercial production, however Abbott's removal of frogs from Ecuador led to changes in Ecuadorian law related to the commercialization of willdlife and their biological properties.
