Petroleum "development" in Ecuador

Arco-Oriente, Arco's affiliate in Amazonian Ecuador, during the construction of a major pipeline. In this scene a swatch of rainforest has been deforested and the pipeline is being buried. At the base of this hill is the drainage of the Jondachi River, which was heavily silted by these operations.

This pipeline now carries approximatley 80,000 barrels of crude from the Villano oil reserve in Amazonian Ecuador oil to the TransEcuadorian pipeline system that eventually brings oil to Ecuador's western port at Guayaquil. Ruptures to pipelines in Ecuador have discharged over 18 million gallons of oil, more than the 10.8 million galloon Exxon Valdez spill.
