Families along Amazonian Ecuador's Arajuno are now forming a captive breeding and restoration program for the endangered Yellow-spotted river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis). At the same time, a native revegetation program will strengthen flood-damaged shorelines that support the breeding beaches of the turtles. As populations recover, the turtles’ eggs may be harvested on a sustainable basis as an alternate protein source.
